BLOW YOUR PHASE OFF

Blow Your Phase Off: operator controls, phase scope and sequencer

I wanted to explore design practically while learning DSP and development. Building bypo taught me everything reading couldn't; some things reading just isn't enough for. I've never read a book on music either. I learn by doing, usually while I'm doing it. I was learning while I made almost every one of my albums. I don't set out with a picture of the thing and go after it. I decide to build, and find out what I'm making, and why, along the way.

Before I started, I'd been thinking about the nature of mathematics, physics and logic. A digital synthesiser is mathematics simulating physics, so it felt honest to build the instrument's architecture on that idea. Phase accumulators sit at the centre of synthesis. The ideas inside them reach into so much else that understanding them made the rest easier to understand. In systems that fundamental, anything unplanned is usually unwanted.

Without AI this wouldn't exist. Primarily it has been programmed by AI agents. Every change is read, committed and tested by hand and the design and audio architecture are mine (akindoflikeness/AKOL). AI is not exclusively a force for good, and has been especially damaging in music and the arts generally. This is written to be open so that you can make an informed decision about whether to engage with it or not.
